How to Claim & Optimize Your Goodreads Author Profile (2026 Guide)

Claiming a Goodreads Author Profile gives eligible authors access to an official author page, the Goodreads Author badge, profile-editing tools, book-listing management, Ask the Author, blog/status features, and other Goodreads author tools.

A claimed profile lets readers see the correct author biography, photo, book list, and Goodreads Author badge in one place.

It allows you to interact directly with your readers through Q&A, comments, and updates.

You can showcase all your books, including upcoming releases, and link them to your profile.

Once you claim your profile, you gain access to special tools for authors, such as giveaway promotions, advertising options, and more.

A verified author profile adds to your credibility and professionalism as an author.

So, the first thing you’ll need to do if you haven’t already is sign up for the basic reader account. This should also be in the same name as you want your author account to be, so worth bearing in mind now, especially if you write under a pseudonym. Go to the Goodreads home page and you’ll likely see this popup, then click Sign up with email.

If you don’t see the popup you can simply navigate to sign up for an account using the menu. Once you have your reader account use the search bar and look for your book. Once you’ve navigated to that page click on the author name. You should see a message similar to this:

    goodreads-author-login

Click on “Let Us know” The next screen should look something like this:

    goodreads-author-signin

Use an author email address that Goodreads can verify. Ideally, this should appear on your official author website, contact page, publisher page, or another public author-facing source. If you publish through KDP, Goodreads may ask for the email address connected to the KDP account used to publish the book.

Then confirm that your book is listed just below this, and click on that. If you have more books on Goodreads that aren’t linked here then include those listing in the box below along with relevant ISBN or ASIN numbers.

After entering all of these details, and I would urge you to be as thorough as possible, submit your application for verification.

You may find Goodreads contact you for further information, and if so provide as much as possible.

However, the are cases where you submit everything you have, Goodreads say it still isn’t enough, and this has put off many authors we have worked with. If this sounds like your situation then don’t lose hope! You still have another option to get your application across the line.

Using this contact link you can reach out to Goodreads directly, but I would discourage anyone from trying this approach unless they have been turned down flat in your normal application process. So please don’t think this will speed up the process for you, as it may have the adverse effect.

Fill in the relevant options as to what your query is about, and after that enter something similar to the following in the “Your question-please be specific” box.

Hello, I am XXX, an author of previously published books, and I have been unable to claim my Goodreads author profile. I provided all information requested of me, but was still turned down. If you could please take a look at this situation for me I will be most appreciative. I have provided a link to my author page and book page for you below.

Goodreads is a reader community first. Authors should keep their profiles accurate, join relevant conversations carefully, and follow Goodreads’ author and review rules. Do not contact readers just because they shelved a book, do not pressure readers for ratings or reviews, and do not join groups only to talk about your own work.

Once you have been approved for your author profile here are some tips for other things to do:

    Add More Books
Make sure all your books are listed on your profile. You can add missing books by using the “Add a New Book” feature.

Update Your Biography and add a profile pic
Write a detailed and engaging biography. Include information about your writing journey, awards, upcoming projects, and personal interests. It’s important to use the same bio and profile pic across all platforms, as uniformity across websites will resonate with readers.

    Connect with Readers
Use the “Ask the Author” feature to engage with your readers. Answer their questions and participate in discussions.

    Post Updates and Blog Entries
Post updates about your writing progress, book releases, and other relevant news. You can also import your existing blog or create new blog posts on Goodreads.

    Host Giveaways
Utilize Goodreads’ giveaway feature to promote your books. Hosting a giveaway can increase your book’s visibility and attract more readers.

    Join Goodreads Groups
Participate in Goodreads groups related to your genre. Engage in conversations and network with both readers and other authors.

    FAQs

    1. What is a Goodreads Author Profile?

A Goodreads Author Profile is the public author page connected to an author’s books on Goodreads. Once approved for the Goodreads Author Program, the author can update their profile photo, biography, and book listings from the author tools available through Goodreads.

    2. Who can join the Goodreads Author Program?

Goodreads says the Author Program is open to published authors, or soon-to-be-published authors, whose book can be found in the Goodreads database.

    3. Is the Goodreads Author Program free?

Yes. Goodreads states that authors can join the Goodreads Author Program for free. Some optional Goodreads features, such as Giveaways, may have separate costs, so authors should check the current Goodreads pages before using them.

    4. Do I need a normal Goodreads account before claiming an author profile?

Yes. The author claim process starts from a Goodreads account. Goodreads sends Author Program application updates to the email address connected to that Goodreads account.

    5. How do I find my author page on Goodreads?

Search Goodreads for your author name or one of your book titles. If the book is already in the Goodreads database, the author name on the book page should link to an author profile. That is the page you need to check before starting the claim process.

    6. What information should I prepare before applying?

Prepare your Goodreads login, author name, Goodreads author-page link, book-page link, ISBN or ASIN details, official author email, and any public author website, publisher page, contact page, or retailer page that helps verify the author identity. Goodreads help guidance says the official author email should be verifiable from an author website or contact source, and KDP authors may need to use the email connected to the KDP account.

    7. What should I do if Goodreads does not approve my request?

Check whether the information supplied clearly connects you to the author name and book record. If the issue is still unclear, use Goodreads’ official help/contact route and include specific links, such as the author page, book page, ISBN or ASIN, and any relevant author website or publisher details.

    8. Can I claim a Goodreads Author Profile if I use a pen name?

Yes, but the public author identity needs to be clear and verifiable. If the book is published under a pen name, make sure the Goodreads profile, book record, public author sources, and application details all support that same author name.

    9. What should I update after Goodreads approves the author profile?

After approval, check the author photo, biography, listed books, editions, links, and any incorrect or duplicated records. Goodreads states that approved authors can update their profile picture, write their bio, and fix book listings through the Author Program tools.

    10. Are there rules authors should follow on Goodreads?

Yes. Goodreads has Author Guidelines. Authors should treat Goodreads as a reader community, avoid pressuring readers, avoid reacting badly to negative reviews, and avoid using groups or reader interactions only to talk about their own books.

What if the AI tool I use can't actually browse the web?

The prompt instructs AI to say so clearly if it can't access the live web that way you don't get a guess dressed up as research. If the tool you're using doesn't browse, try one that does (most current versions of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude can), or come to us directly and ask the questions you'd have asked the AI. We're happy to answer in writing.
